# Çankırı Museum
Housed in the historic provincial governor’s building from the Republic era, Çankırı Museum is an important institution that introduces visitors from Istanbul to the region’s rich cultural heritage. With free admission and open to all ages, the museum features thousands of artifacts displayed across two floors and a garden area.
On the ground floor, you’ll encounter fossils reflecting a geological period eight million years ago, along with cinematographic narratives that bring the life of that era back to life. The archaeological collection is rich with artifacts from the Hittite, Hellenistic, Roman, and Islamic periods. Of particular note are the dragon-motif sculptures from the Seljuk period, originating from Taş Mescid, which are now used as a symbol of modern medicine and are among the museum’s most valuable pieces.
The upper floor tells the social history of Çankırı through traditional hand-woven products and ethnographic artifacts, while the garden features sculptural examples. It is recommended to allocate at least two hours to explore this comprehensive collection, which spans from the region’s strategic role in the Turkish War of Independence to ancient times.
